Origin and history

Bisqueytan Castle is a strong house built on a site occupied since prehistoric times. In the 12th century, a tower was built there, including a Romanesque castral chapel still well preserved today. The remains of the medieval mill, destroyed at the end of the 19th century, remain near the eastern courtine, testifying to past economic activity.

During the Hundred Years' War, the fortress suffered significant damage. It was rebuilt and transformed in the 15th and 16th centuries by Jean de Piis and his family. Before the Revolution, the seigneury belonged to Montesquieu. After successive sales and a period of abandonment, the estate is now undergoing restorations and archaeological excavations.

The castle, its ditches, its dovecote and the remains of the mill have been protected since 1996. The vestiges of earlier settlements and rock shelters on the site highlight its thousand-year occupation. The location, noted as very satisfactory, makes it a place of major historical and archaeological interest in Gironde.
