Origin and history

The castle of Bontin is a building of the 4th quarter of the 17th century, located in the commune of Ormes, in the department of Yonne (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté). It is distinguished by its location to the west of the village and its architecture marked by classified elements, including moat, bridges, and carved chimneys inspired by the models of David Bertrand, sculptor associated with the Coustou. The estate also includes a dovecote, communes, and a park, partially registered since 1994.

The castle is linked to the history of the Courtenay, a noble family that held the fief until the 16th century. He was also the framework for the marriage of Sully (minister of Henry IV) with Anne de Courtenay in 1584, before its reconstruction in the late seventeenth century. The anterior façade was redesigned in 1820. Among its particularities, a bas-relief of a fireplace in the living room commemorates the passage of the Rhine, an undated historical event in the sources.

Ranked as a Historic Monument, the castle enjoys double protection: inscription in 1994 (indoors, commons, park) and classification in 1995 (facades, roofs, moats, fireplaces). Today, the domain belongs to a private company, but its exact status (visits, rentals) is not specified in the available sources. Its official address, referenced in the Mérimée base, is the 106 Château de Bontin, 89110 Les Ormes.
