Origin and history

Bourgon Castle, located on the road from Belgique to Montourtier, is a 15th century building that spanned six centuries with only two sales. In 1406 Jean de Montecler acquired the seigneury of Bourgon, passed on to his descendants until 1577. The estate then belonged to the Counts of Laval, the Dukes of Mayenne and the Abbey of Fontaine-Daniel, as evidenced by an admission of 1663.

The architecture combines medieval elements (main room and 15th century staircase) with subsequent additions, such as 18th century woodwork. The castle houses remarkable rooms: an ancient library, a 600-year-old cartrier, the "blue cabinet" room of the Marquise de Sablé, and a chapel of 1528. The moat, now dried, is crossed by a graded bridge.

Property of the Montmorency in the seventeenth century, the castle then passes into the hands of the Souvré, Louvois, and then the Villeroy. In 1994 and 1996, its commons and heart were protected as historical monuments. Acquired in 2004 by the Ducatillon family, he received restorations supported by the French Heritage Society between 2009 and 2012.

The gardens preserve their 16th-17th century layout, while the interior combines 18th (living) and 20th century decorations (dining room). A painted 17th century ceiling, imitating a Hungarian tapestry, and period floors remain in some rooms. The site remains a rare testimony of seigneurial and architectural continuity.
