Origin and history

The castle of Brantes, located in Sorgues in the Vaucluse, is a building of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, typical of Provencal aristocratic architecture. It consists of a central building flanked by two wings, surrounded by a vast park planted with large plane trees, isolating the property of the surrounding modern buildings. Its garden, classified as "remarkable", combines an ordered space with English and preserved landscape elements, such as basins and shaded aisles. The chapel, a "cloister" and its annexed garden complete this harmonious ensemble, always maintained by the Brantes Sauvage family, of which Anne-Aymone Giscard d'Estaing is a notable descendant.

The estate has been partially protected since 1987, with an inscription covering facades, roofs, gate, gate and court floor. In 2016, an extension of this protection included the entire park, the garden and its outbuildings (closing wall, gutter, irrigation network). Although private property, the castle opens its doors to the public during seasonal cultural events, such as the "Rendez-vous aux jardins" organised every first weekend in June by the association of "Friends of the Garden of Brantes".

The history of the castle is closely linked to that of its owner family, which has preserved its historical character while adapting to successive periods. The estate thus illustrates the evolution of noble residences in Provence, between architectural heritage and landscape integration. Its park, designed to highlight Mediterranean nature, reflects the influences of French and English-speaking gardens, while integrating into a rural environment marked by the presence of the Rhône and neighbouring canals.

Sorgues, where the castle stands, is a town with a rich past, marked by its strategic role in the Rhône valley, between Avignon and Orange. The city, once fortified and linked to pontifical history, has seen the development of a dynamic agricultural and industrial economy around it, which is still evidenced today by the remains of the pope's palace and the numerous surrounding castles. The castle of Brantes, by its elegance and park, embodies this duality between historical heritage and contemporary living.

The guided tours, organized from Easter to Toussaint, allow you to discover the interiors and the exteriors of the estate, while cultural activities rhythmize the year. These initiatives, carried out by the owners and local associations, help to make the castle a living place, rooted in the collective memory of Sorgues and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
