Origin and history
The Château de Campagne is an emblematic building located in the commune of Roumoules, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Built in the second half of the 17th century and redesigned in the 18th century, it illustrates the architecture of the Provencal seigneurial residences of this period, integrating both residual defensive elements and spaces dedicated to the agricultural farm, typical of the rural estates of Haute-Provence. The site combines a noble home, outbuildings, and a dovecote, reflecting the duality between aristocratic habitat and local economic activity.
The castle was listed as a historical monument in 1989 and was partially classified in 1992, thus protecting remarkable elements such as its staircases, its decorated living room, the facades of the farm buildings, or the caladized floors of the courtyard. These protective measures concern both the main and adjacent agricultural structures, highlighting the heritage importance of the whole. Private property, the castle preserves traces of its past through architectural details such as the varnished tiles of the vestibule or the two turrets surrounding the court of honor.
Available sources, including the Mérimée base and specialized works such as Châteaux and bastides in Haute Provence (1991), highlight its role in the local historical landscape. Although the archives do not specify the original sponsors, the building is part of the network of provencal castles of the 17th and 18th centuries, a period marked by post-Renaissance social stabilization and a boom of secondary residences for the regional elites. The location along the RN 552 and its approximate address (5001 Cht of Campaign) suggest a strategic position, probably linked to the communication axes of the time.
Today, the country castle remains a material testimony of the rural and seigneurial history of the Haute-Provence. Its state of conservation and its successive protections make it a key site for understanding the evolution of agricultural estates and noble habitats in this mountainous region, between Digne and Duration. The lack of details about its current accessibility (visits, accommodation) suggests a mainly private vocation, although its status as a historic monument makes it a local point of interest.
