Origin and history

Châtillon-en-Bazois Castle is built on a strategic site, a rocky piton between the Aron River loop and the Nivernais Canal. Occupied since the year 900, it retains 13th-century defensive elements such as a tower and underground, as well as a canal-powered pool. Its architecture reflects successive phases: 13th century cellar, 14th century fortified tower, house of the late 15th century, 17th century commons and 19th century remodeling. A secret exit formerly linked the castle to the crypt of the nearby church of Alluy.

The first lords of the place were the sisters of Châtillon-en-Bazois until 1370, followed by noble families: Rochefort (1371 and 1588), Chandio (1477), Pontailler (1499), Aersens de Somelsvick (1664), Villefort, Béthune-Chabris (1716), Pracomtal (1735), and Sribny and Moreau-Sribny from 1972. The estate, partially classified as a historic monument in 1989 for its facades, roofs and gardens, owes its landscaped park to Paul de Lavanne de Chulot, famous 19th century landscaper. Its gardens are now labeled "Remarkable Garden".

The castle embodies both a medieval fortress and an aristocratic residence transformed over the centuries. Its pool, powered by the Nivernais Canal, illustrates the hydraulic ingenuity of the period, while its terraces and retaining walls highlight its adaptation to the relief. The 1989 protection also covers a staircase with screws and a vaulted cellar, testimonies of its defensive past. The site remains a landmark visible from the canal, marking the Nièvre landscape.
