Origin and history
Châtillon-sur-Lison Castle is a medieval building located in the municipality of Cussey-sur-Lison, Doubs. It stands at the top of a hilltop, offering stunning views of the Loue and Lison valleys, 900 metres from their confluence. Its strategic location and architecture make it a visible landmark from surrounding villages, such as Lizine or the road leading to Cussey-sur-Lison.
The presence of the castle is attested from the twelfth century, although its present location dates back to the thirteenth century. At that time, he gave his name to a noble lineage, the House of Châtillon, which has now disappeared. In the 15th century, the castle passed under the control of the family of Montagu, notably through Ottonin de Montagu. The restoration and improvement campaigns carried out in the 16th and 18th centuries marked its architectural evolution.
The main house, in arc of circle, is characterized by a central protruding tower and a wing in return to the west. The courtyard, organized on two levels, includes a courtyard of the communes north of the house. Several rooms retain remarkable decorative elements, including three rooms decorated with panelling and Louis XVI style fireplaces. Since 2002, the house and some outbuildings have been listed as historical monuments.
