Origin and history

Chazotte Castle is a strong house built between the end of the 16th century and 1624, following a first mansion, in the context of the Wars of Religion. This three-storey building, with four ice-creamers in its corners, illustrates a defensive architecture adapted to the tensions of the era. Its park, composed of groves and gardens, and its interior fittings reflect further changes, including an added Renaissance tower around 1860.

Partially classified as Historical Monuments in 1981 (facades, roofs, poterne), the castle underwent extensive restoration work between 2022 and 2024. It has remained inhabited by the same family since 1728, showing rare heritage continuity. Part of the estate is accessible via a local tourist trail, "Arlebosc Hidden Archives", highlighting its history and environment.

Located in Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the castle overlooks the Doux Valley, formerly served by the Petit Train du Vivarais. Its strategic location, close to Tournon-sur-Rhône, and its hybrid architecture (defensive and residential) make it a typical example of the strong ardèche houses. The slots added in the 19th century on the wall of enclosure recall a symbolic desire to strengthen its medieval aspect.

The site, always private, is partially visited, with a focus on preserving its movable and landscaped heritage. The nearby station of Boucieu-le-Roi, a former stop on the tourist railway, offers convenient access for visitors wishing to explore this rural and historical heritage.
