Origin and history

Château de Chazoux, located in Hurigny en Saône-et-Loire, has its origins in a winery structured since the 18th century. A first master house was attested in 1809, but it was from the 1880s that Alphonse Michoud and his wife Thérèse de Boissieu undertook a major transformation of the site. Although the exterior architecture remains sober, the interiors are enriched with high-quality painted decorations and wallpapers, giving each room a distinct historical atmosphere (Middle Age, Renaissance, Louis XV).

Owners call on renowned artists for this ambitious project. Victor Bussière and his workshop make the painted decorations of the salons and rooms, while the Luizet brothers, Lyon horticulturalists, design a park with irregular tracks, punctuated with gazebos and factories. The castle thus embodies 19th century eclecticism, combining various stylistic references and craftsmanship.

The estate is distinguished by the exceptional preservation of its interior decorative ensembles, followed by a small living room and a large Louis XV lounge, a Renaissance dining room, a neo-Gothic library with the coat of arms of the Michoud-Boissieu, and a neo-Renaissance cabinet. The outbuildings, like orangery, the heated greenhouse and the cooler, complement this elegant setting, typical of the large bourgeois houses of the time.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 2023, Chazoux Castle illustrates the alliance between a preserved architectural heritage and a landscaped park thought of as a coherent whole. The winding paths, lawns and views of the surrounding landscape reflect the influence of the Luizet, while the interior decorations, united by clear panelling and coloured nets, highlight the artistic unity of the place.
