Origin and history

Chevroz Castle is a building classified among historical monuments, located in the Doubs department, on the banks of the Ognon River. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, with changes in the 18th century, it is distinguished by its defensive architecture, marked by four square towers with pyramidal roof. Its strategic location, near a meander of Ognon, suggests that it once protected a ford, as evidenced by the archaeological remains discovered at the site.

Some parts of the castle, including facades, roofs, towers, as well as interior elements such as vaulted kitchen or tapestries bedroom, were included in the inventory of historical monuments on 24 October 1988. The estate extends over 400 hectares, with a park accessible from the south facade. The presence of earlier remains and the proximity of the river underline its historic role in controlling local traffic routes.

The entrance gate, wrought iron gates, the courtyard well and the bridge over the ditch are protected elements, reflecting the heritage importance of the site. Although the sources do not mention historical figures related to its construction, its architecture and inscription testify to its status as an emblematic monument of the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. The castle remains a representative example of the fortified castles of this period, adapted to the defensive and residential stakes of their time.
