Origin and history

Clermont Castle, also known as Regard Castle, is a Renaissance building built in the second half of the 16th century in the commune of Clermont, Haute-Savoie. It replaces an ancient medieval comtal castle today disappeared, from which it partially reuses stones. Its architecture is inspired by Italian models, with a main house body surrounded by arcade galleries, reflecting the influence of the Savoyard Renaissance.

The history of the castle is closely linked to the Regard family, notably to Bishop Gallois de Regard, Bishop of Bagnorea and the camerer of Pope Paul IV. In 1576, the Duke Emmanuel-Philibert of Savoie authorized the building of this new castle as a summer residence. The construction, begun in 1578, was completed in 1582, the year of his death. The chapel of the castle is the place where Gallois de Regard gives the tone to the future Saint Francis de Sales in 1578, marking a major religious event.

The castle remained in the Regard family until 1860, passing into the hands of several generations who organized prestigious receptions there, such as that of Duke Charles-Emmanuel II in 1650. In the 18th century, family members played a significant military role, particularly in the reorganization of the Sardinian army. After 1860, the castle changed ownership several times before being acquired in 1966 by the department of Haute-Savoie, which now ensures its preservation and openness to the public.

Ranked Historic Monument in 1950 for its facades and courtyard, then in 1988 for its interiors, the castle now houses exhibitions, concerts and guided tours. Its architecture blends medieval elements, such as the foundations of the old paternal house of Gallois de Regard, with Renaissance innovations, such as large windows without sills and baluster galleries. The departmental property now makes it possible to enhance this heritage through cultural events.

The site, open to the public from April to October, offers an immersion in the daily life of the Savoyard Renaissance. The guided tours highlight the history of the Regards, their political and religious influence, as well as the architectural transformations of the castle. The court of honour, framed by two rectangular pavilions, regularly hosts performances, perpetuating the festive and cultural vocation of the place.
