Origin and history

The castle of Clermont-Savès, located in the eponymous village of Occitanie, finds its origins in a seigneury dating back to the 12th century. However, the present building was built in the second half of the 18th century, replacing an old castle completely razed. This rectangular building, placed on vaulted cellars, illustrates the elegant architecture of its time, with marked classical influences.

The castle is distinguished by its sumptuous interior spaces, designed for reception and prestige. The large hall, supported by canned columns with doric capitals, leads to a dining room decorated with fountains and credences surmounted by ice. The rotunda reception room, opening onto the park, as well as the square living room and boudoir, are decorated with stunned mythological or gallant subjects, typical of the late eighteenth century. Two stone staircases, with wrought iron ramps in Louis XVI style, serve the upper floors, where there are rooms with fireplaces decorated with painted hazes, depicting scenes such as Perseus delivering Andromeda or The Coronation of Venus.

Ranked a Historic Monument by order of 14 March 1977, the castle protects its facades, roofs, as well as several remarkable rooms on its ground floor and first floor. Among them, the vestibule, the office, the dining room, the rotunda lounge, and rooms with adorned fireplaces testify to the fascination and artistic know-how of the period. The exact address, 335 Chemin du Château in Clermont-Savès, places the monument in the Gers department, formerly in Midi-Pyrénées.

The accuracy of its geographical location is considered satisfactory a priori, although adjustments may be necessary for accurate identification via modern mapping tools. The castle, although protected, does not reveal in the available sources its current status regarding visits, space rental or accommodation, leaving a mystery about its contemporary accessibility.

The architectural and decorative elements of the castle of Clermont-Savès reflect the aristocratic tastes of the end of the Ancien Régime, where art and comfort were combined to create places of social representation. The studded decorations, painted fireplaces and wrought iron stairs recall the influence of decorative arts under Louis XVI, a period of transition to more refined and neoclassical styles.

Finally, the partial inclusion of the castle in the inventory of Historic Monuments underlines its heritage importance, thus preserving a tangible testimony of local history and architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the Enlightenment. The sources, notably from the Merimée base and Monumentum, confirm its anchoring in the cultural landscape of Occitanie.
