Origin and history

Collonges Castle is located in the commune of Grand-Bourg, near Guéret, in the Creuse department. Located at Collonges, this monument illustrates a superposition of architectural epochs: its medieval origin is attested by the presence of ancient towers, while its current house body dates mainly from the eighteenth century. This contrast between medieval defensive elements and more recent dwellings reflects the evolution of seigneurial and residential needs throughout the centuries.

The site initially housed a fortified mansion during the Middle Ages, characteristic of the aristocratic residences of the period in Limousin. However, major transformations in the 18th century profoundly altered its structure, partially erasing the traces of its original appearance. There is no specific information to identify the sponsors of this work or the significant events associated with this castle, except for its inscription in the landscape of the Creuse and Central Massif castles.

Today, Collonges Castle is included in local heritage inventories, as evidenced by the lists of historical monuments of the Creuse and the castles of New Aquitaine. Its hybrid architecture bears witness to the successive adaptations of rural elites, between feudal heritage and modernization of the 17th and 19th centuries. Available sources, including old postcards and online references, highlight its anchoring in regional history, without providing details about its daily life or its historical occupants.
