Origin and history

The Château de Cornil, located in the village of the same name in Corrèze (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), dates from the 14th century. In medieval times, Cornil was a war square with at least two castles: one near the village (of which remains remain), the other close to the church, marked by a tower still visible. These fortifications were involved in the League's sieges, a major conflict of the late 16th century, although their construction dates back two centuries earlier.

The current building consists of two adjacent square buildings, the highest of which is five floors. An adjacent turret once housed the staircase leading to the dungeon. The ensemble is lined with mâchicoulis with elongated consoles, divided into three or four retreats, characteristic of medieval military architecture. These defensive elements underline its strategic role in a region marked by political and religious tensions.

Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 14 April 1927, the Château de Cornil only retains remains of its original structure. Its registration bears witness to its heritage importance, although its exact location is considered unclear (level 5/10 depending on the sources). The available data do not mention original sponsors or successive owners, but its history remains linked to the conflicts of the League and the local feudal organization.
