Origin and history

The castle of Cougousse, located in the village of Cougousse on the town of Salles-la-Source (Aveyron, Occitanie), is an emblematic monument of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Built mainly in sandstone and blond limestone, it is distinguished by its two square towers on the west facade and a circular tower with a screw staircase. Its architecture, marked by door windows and decorative elements such as adorned chimneys, reflects the influence of the Ruthenian notables of the time. The main façade, with its 17th century oriented and enlarged openings, as well as the grey glass windows on the staircase, bear witness to a refined architectural know-how.

The castle originally belonged to the Vigouroux family in the 14th century, the influential merchants of the Rouergue. He then passed to the hands of the Escarilhans, and in 1587 to the family of Patris by the marriage of Isabel of Escarilhan with Francis of Patris. These families, among the most prominent for the ruthless notability, mark the history of the place. In the 16th century, the castle embodies the typical holiday architecture of the Marcillac valley, combining elegance and functionality. Its ground floor, partially preserved in its original state, includes cradle vaults and adorned chimneys, including one inspired by Tuscan and ionic orders.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1993, the Château de Cougousse also illustrates a rich cultural heritage: poet Pauline de Flaugergues, born in Rodez, spent her childhood there. Its interior decor, although redesigned, retains remarkable elements such as French ceilings and an old parquet floor. The building, with its ostentatious facade and architectural details, remains a valuable testimony to local history and the evolution of noble residences in Rouergue between Renaissance and modern times.
