Château de Courbeville : inscription by order of 7 June 1926
Origin and history
The Château de Courbeville, located in the commune of Chessy (Rhône), is a building dating from the 3rd quarter of the 13th century, a period marked by the development of seigneurial fortresses in response to feudal conflicts and the need to control territories. Its architecture reflects the military construction techniques of the time, with defensive elements adapted to local strategic issues. The site has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1926, demonstrating its heritage importance and preservation.
The location of the castle, at 393 Chemin de Courbeville, places the monument in a rural environment close to Lyon, in an area then dominated by commercial exchanges and rivalries between lords. The castles of that time served as both aristocratic residence, administrative centre and defence point, playing a key role in the social and economic organization of the countryside. Their presence illustrates the fragmentation of political power in the Middle Ages, where each fortress embodied the authority of a lineage or vassal.
Courbeville Castle was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 7 June 1926, an official recognition of its historical and architectural value. This legal protection aims to preserve the original 13th century elements, although the available sources do not detail any subsequent changes. The site is now referenced in the Mérimée database under the code Insee 69056, attached to the commune of Chessy in the Rhône department.
