Origin and history

The Château de Créancey, located in Burgundy-Franche-Comté in the eponymous village, is a 17th and 18th century building. It is distinguished by its classical architecture, with a central body flanked by two higher pavilions, an external wrought iron staircase, and commons organized into three pavilions. The estate, surrounded by a park, includes a greenhouse, a circular dovecote with a conical roof, and contemporary sculptures. The facades, roofs and dovecote have been protected since 1971 as Historic Monuments.

The history of the castle dates back to 1354, when Pierre de Châteauneuf left to his brother Ponce a strong house defended by towers and ditches, dependent on the Barony of Charny. In 1599, Marguerite de Brasey, widow of Henry de Cercey, became its owner. The present castle was rebuilt in 1660 by Antoine Comeau, keeper of the seals of the Parliament of Burgundy, as evidenced by an engraved monogram dated 1650. In the 18th century, it passed into the hands of Jacques-Philippe Fyot de La Marche (1738), then Joseph-Nicolas Comeau (1754).

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Montille family acquired the castle and made minor modifications, keeping it until 1940. The house, structured around a vaulted ground floor, a floor and attic illuminated by skylights, reflects the architectural codes of the era. The communes are home to crib vaulted stables and a remarkable portal, while the dovecote, typical of seigneurial estates, emphasizes the agricultural importance of the site. The park, crossed by the Vandenesse River, completes this heritage complex.

The castle is now listed at the Relais historique de France and is open to the visit, although precise practical information (times, services) is not detailed in the sources. Its inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1971 covers facades, roofs, commons and dovecote, guaranteeing the preservation of this testimony of Burgundy history.
