Origin and history

The Château de Cruzol is a former castle founded in the late 12th or early 13th century, located in the municipality of Lentilly, in the Rhône department. It was redesigned in the 16th and 17th centuries, with an east wing dating from the end of the 17th century, inhabited by the Lyon painter Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (1736-1810). This monument, still inhabited today by several families, is one of the most emblematic of Lentilly.

The castle was allegedly founded by the archbishops of Lyon, then passed into the hands of several owners, including Guy de Lanay in 1340 and Guillaume Henry, bishop of Lyon, around 1499. Although it has been a historical monument since 7 June 1926, it does not visit. Its architecture combines medieval elements and subsequent transformations, reflecting its evolution throughout the centuries.

Cruzol Castle illustrates the feudal and architectural history of the Lyon region. Its inscription as a historic monument bears witness to its heritage importance, although its access remains reserved. It also embodies the link between local aristocracy, such as the archbishops of Lyon, and the social and artistic transformations of the 16th and 17th centuries.
