Origin and history

The castle of Darney, located in the southwest of the Vosges, finds its origins in the 10th century with a first construction by the local lords. In the Middle Ages, it became a strategic military place for the Dukes of Lorraine, who built ramparts there, and at Darney the nickname "city of thirty towers". Destroyed in 1634 during the Thirty Years' War, then shaved in 1639, it was rebuilt in 1725 on its former foundations to accommodate the provost. The architecture incorporates elements of the original dungeon, such as a spiral staircase, and includes an audience hall decorated with coats of arms of families of Bohemian glassmakers installed in the area since the 14th century.

In the 19th century, the castle served as a town hall before being replaced by the former convent of the Recollets. Its modern history is marked by its role in the creation of Czechoslovakia: in 1918 Darney welcomed the gathering of Czech and Slovak volunteers, and President Raymond Poincaré officially recognized their independent state. A Czechoslovak museum was founded in 1938 by Mayor André Barbier, completed in 2018 by a museum dedicated to singer Damia, born in the region.

Ranked a historic monument in 1984, the castle preserves medieval remains in its lower floors and elements from the 18th and 19th centuries. Its partially preserved ramparts bear witness to its military past. Today, it symbolizes both local history, Bohemian glass heritage, and Franco-Czech ties, while celebrating a major artistic figure of the twentieth century.
