Origin and history

The Château de Dornes is a medieval building built in the 13th century, located in the commune of Dornes, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This monument illustrates the defensive and residential architecture of its time, with elements such as moat and dovecote, characteristic of the castles of this period. Its partial inscription for historical monuments in 1996 protects major components: the castle itself, its moats, its commons, its dormant bridge and its dovecote.

The castle is also associated with the memory of Marshal Lannes, a military figure of the Napoleonic Empire. The quality of its facade and interior painted decorations is a testament to the architectural and artistic changes it experienced in the 16th and 18th centuries. These additions reflect the evolution of the tastes and uses of castles, moving from the medieval fortress to the aristocratic residence.

Today, the castle of Dornes remains a testimony of the Nivernais heritage, with a precise location in the Nièvre department. His history is documented in local works such as Le Nivernois.
