Origin and history

The castle of Durianne, located in the hamlet of the same name attached to the Monteil in 1832, is a well-preserved example of a strong house of the Velay of the late Middle Ages. Built mainly in the 15th century, it was redesigned in the 18th century, as evidenced by its large monolithy lintel bays and small wood joinery. Its modest architecture includes a body of rectangular houses flanked by towers, including a round at the southwest corner and a square to the north, the latter crowned with a false crenelage added in the 1920s.

The castle belonged in the 19th century to Joseph Terrasson de Fonfreyde, a travel companion of Gérard de Nerval, who sold it in 1836 to Florimond Balme du Garay. The seigneury had previously changed hands several times: acquired in 1757 by the Chabrier family from the Pons des Ollières, it was passed on in 1803 to Antoine Terrasson de Fonfreyde, doctor at the Puy, before being ceded to his son Joseph. Since 1836, the estate has remained in the Balme du Garay family, which undertook notable works in the 1920s, such as the coronation of the square tower.

Originally, the seigneury of Durianne was considered by the Polignacs as a strategic guard post on the Loire. The first known owners date back to the 12th century with the Gachet family, followed by the Shabade (XIV-15th centuries), Nogaret (XVIe), Dorlhac (XVIe-XVIIe), and Columbus (XVIIe). In the 18th century, the Jerphanion and Chabrier succeeded each other before the Reboul family of Fonfreyde, became owner at the end of the century. The present building, rebuilt at the end of the 15th century, preserves Gothic elements such as the prismatic frames of the stair tower.

The castle was listed for historical monuments on 4 January 2021, including the house, its courtyards, and its alley planted. Its stonework structure with Blavos stoneware frames, round tile roofs, and full countervents illustrate both its medieval heritage and subsequent adaptations. The Gothic piers of the stair tower contrast with the 18th century layouts, reflecting an architectural evolution over centuries.

Today, the castle of Durianne remains a testimony of local history, marked by its successions of owners and its construction campaigns, from the 18th century modifications to the restorations of the 1920s. Its recent inscription as a historic monument underscores its heritage importance in the landscape of Velay and Haute-Loire.
