Origin and history

The castle of Fajac-la-Relenque is an emblematic building located in the municipality of Marquein, in the department of l'Aude, in the Occitan region. Built in the 16th, 18th and 19th centuries, it stands at the so-called L-Arlenque and overlooks the hills of the "little Tuscany", a landscape characteristic of this part of the Laureau. Its architecture reflects the stylistic evolutions of these three periods, although the precise details of its transformations remain partially documented.

The castle was listed as historic monuments by order of 25 February 2025, thus recognizing its heritage value. This protection covers all buildings, delimited on a plan annexed to the Order, and applies to Parcel C 86 of Marquein's cadastre. Although sources mention its potential opening to visits or services such as guest rooms, no specific information is available on its current use or interior arrangements.

Located at the address Château de Fajac, 11410 Marquein, the site is referenced in the Mérimée database under the code Insee 11218, attached to the district of Carcassonne. Approximate GPS coordinates allow it to be located in a rural environment, typical of the castles of the Aude. Its name also evokes the neighbouring village of Fajac-la-Relenque, from where it is visible, highlighting its territorial and historical anchoring in the Audian Laus.
