Origin and history

Falgous Castle is an 18th-century building located in the hamlet of Falgous-le-Bas, on the town of Mounes-Prohencoux, in the department of Aveyron. This monument is distinguished by its typical architecture, with a quadrangular house body framed by two towers: one circular, the other square. The front door, topped by three crows, suggests the ancient existence of a defensive crow. Nearby, a courtyard bordered by a wing housing stables completes the whole, connected to the communes by a porch in the middle of the pit.

The interiors of the castle preserve remarkable elements of the eighteenth century. The old kitchens, still equipped with their bread oven, sandstone sink, water tank and vegetable garden, bear witness to the domestic life of the time. On the first floor, a room decorated with stucco and a bedroom of the square tower, also decorated, illustrate the architectural refinement of this period. The stables, vaulted with ridges and equipped with sandstone feeders, as well as the lauze-covered dovecote, underline the residential and agricultural character of the estate.

Ranked among the historical monuments since 31 March 1994, the castle of Falgous specifically protects its facades, roofs, historic kitchens, a large room decorated on the first floor, as well as its pigeon house and stables. These protections highlight a preserved architectural and functional heritage, reflecting both the 18th century style and the seigneurial or rural organization of Aveyron.
