Origin and history

Fondelin Castle, attested by the end of the 16th century, has undergone major transformations over the centuries. At the end of the 17th century, notable changes were made, but it was mainly at the hinge of the 18th and 19th centuries that partial reconstruction gave it its present appearance. Its architecture is distinguished by a sober and elegant facade, framed by two houses, while its entrance hall and stairwell house original decorations, such as cariatids from the Virebent factory and false wall marbles.

The neo-Gothic chapel, located opposite the castle, impresses with its harmonious proportions, its historic stained glass windows and refined sculptures. The estate extends over a vast park, designed by landscape architect Eugene Bühler in the 19th century, whose original provisions are largely preserved. This park includes remarkable features such as a closed vegetable garden, a pre-19th century pool, the ruins of a dairy, and a cave or cooler. The communes, organised around a square courtyard accessible by two doors, complete this coherent architectural ensemble.

Ranked as a Historic Monument in 2017, Fondelin Castle fully protects its main building, communes, chapel, as well as the entire park with its built elements. The interiors preserved period wallpapers in the living rooms and rooms, while the decors of the lobby and stairway testify to the care taken to restore it. The exact address, 9002 Fondelin in Condom (Gers), confirms its anchoring in the Occitan heritage, between aristocratic heritage and 19th century landscape art.
