Origin and history
The château de Frolois is a monument located in the commune of Frôlois, in Côte-d Its origins date back to at least the 13th century, with major changes in the 14th and 18th centuries. This castle illustrates the architectural and defensive evolution typical of Burgundy seigneurial buildings, marked by phases of construction and adaptation to the needs of their owners over the centuries.
The castle has been partially protected under the Historical Monuments since the end of the 20th century. The facades and roofs, as well as the room called Antoine de Vergy (with its decor), were inscribed by order of 21 December 1977. Later, support and enclosure walls received additional protection on 19 March 1991. These measures reflect the heritage value of the building, both for its architecture and for its remarkable interior elements.
Although available sources (such as Monumentum) do not detail its social or military history, the castle of Frolois is part of the landscape of the fortresses and seigneurial residences of Burgundy. These buildings often played a central role in the local organisation, serving as a place of power, defence or residence for regional elites. Their presence reflects the political and economic dynamics of the region, particularly during the Middle Ages and the modern era.
