Origin and history
The castle of Gardères is a home of fields faithful to the architectural arrangements of the second half of the eighteenth century. Located in the centre of the village of Gardères, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, it was rebuilt on a typical plan of this time, giving it its present appearance. Two turrets were added at the beginning of the 19th century, slightly changing its initial appearance. Its interior staircase is distinguished by a wooden ramp carved of volutes, a remarkable part of its heritage.
According to the archives, the castle welcomed Philippe V, king of Spain, during an improvised stop on 29 May 1706, while travelling with his suite. This historical fact, although mentioned, remains anecdotal compared to the architectural importance of the building. The castle has been included in the additional inventory of historic monuments since July 7, 1997, recognizing its heritage value.
The village of Gardères, where the castle stands, historically belongs to the province of Béarn, a region marked by a strong cultural unity and a diversity of landscapes. The monument is part of a rural territory, where agriculture and water resources management (such as nearby Gabas Lake) have played a central role in local social and economic organization. Béarn, a former independent state, retains a distinct identity within Occitanie.
The geographical context of the castle is marked by the presence of several rivers, including the Gabas, Leez and Louet, which pass through or take their source on the commune. These natural elements influenced the development of the village and, by extension, the settlement of the castle, which probably served as a seigneurial residence or as a control place for the surrounding lands. The region, exposed to an altered ocean climate, has also shaped local lifestyles and constructions.
On the administrative level, Gardères has known various belongings over the centuries, from the quarter of Tarbes to the Barony of Gardères, and from 1801 to the canton of Ossun. Today, the municipality is part of the Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées agglomeration community, reflecting its integration into a wider territory while maintaining its rural character. The castle, as a symbol of this heritage, remains a witness to the historical and social developments of the region.
