Origin and history
Gargas Castle, located in the commune of Viviès en Occitanie, is a house built mainly in the seventeenth century. Although parts of the ground floor were redesigned in the 19th century, the first floor retains remarkable architectural elements, including gypsum decorations (stuces on chimneys) made between 1680 and 1700. These decorations adorn rooms such as the lounge-library, the rooms and the corridor, offering an overview of the decorative art of the late Great Century.
The north wing of the castle incorporates remains of an earlier house dating back to the 15th century, revealing an earlier occupation of the site. The main entrance, located in the northwest corner, is marked by an elegant door surmounted by a carved lintel bearing the date 1632, indicating a major phase of construction or renovation. Inside, a ramp staircase serves the three levels of the building, characteristic of the noble houses of this period.
The castle was partially protected under the Historical Monuments: a global inscription (with the exception of the classified parts) was issued by order of 14 October 1997, followed by a classification of the three pieces with gypsum decorations on the first floor of the west wing by order of 4 May 1998. These measures highlight the heritage value of the most preserved elements, including the 17th century stucco.
The location of the castle, in the Ariège department (Occitanian region), reflects its anchoring in a territory marked by feudal and then modern history. The village of Viviès, like many rural localities in the region, was then organized around local lords, whose residences – such as this house – served both as a place of power, a dwelling and a social representation.
The transformations of the 19th century, although less documented, reflect an adaptation of the building to the more recent residential needs, while partially preserving the original structure. Today, the castle of Gargas thus illustrates centuries of architectural history, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era, with an emphasis on its peak to the seventeenth century.
