Origin and history

The Château de Garges, located in Garges-lès-Gonesse in Val-d'Oise, is a monument dating back to the 17th century. Although the main building disappeared, its most notable remains — an adorned gate and its two pillars, accompanied by a bahut wall — were preserved. These elements, located on Rue de Verdun and Place Abbé-Herrand, still bear witness to the architecture and prestige of the modern era. They were officially protected by an inscription under the Historic Monuments on June 9, 2022, recognizing their heritage value.

The location of the castle, now reduced to its cadastral plot (section AV, plot 14), is estimated with satisfactory a priori accuracy (note 6/10). The protected remains now belong to the commune of Garges-lès-Gonesse, stressing their importance for the local heritage. No information is available on its current use (visits, events, or accommodation), but their status as public property suggests a heritage or cultural vocation.

The 17th century in Île-de-France was marked by the rise of seigneurial and bourgeois residences, often linked to the growing influence of Paris. The castles of this period served as both places of power, social representation and secondary residences for the elites. Although the archives do not specify the sponsor or historical occupants of the Château de Garges, its architecture and location reflect this regional dynamic, where monuments played a central role in territorial organization and networks of influence.
