Origin and history
Ginals Castle, located in Villeneuve in the department of Aveyron, is an ancient castle whose origins date back to the 14th century. From this medieval period there remains a square dungeon with crib windows, characteristic of the defensive architecture of the period. Major transformations took place in the 17th and 18th centuries, with the reshaping of an adjacent wing and the addition of a squared building body, including a 15th century staircase. These changes reflect the changing residential and aesthetic needs of successive owners.
The chapel of the castle park is marked by a significant religious event: it hosts the first communion of Saint Emilie de Rodat (1787-1852), founder of the Congregation of the Holy Family and major spiritual figure of the Rouergue. This saint, who spent her childhood in the castle, would have been there the revelation of her vocation. The monument, partially protected since 1980, thus illustrates both the architectural history of the region and its religious heritage.
In administrative terms, the castle is listed as historical monuments by order of 31 December 1980. This protection applies specifically to facades and roofs, a 15th century spiral staircase, as well as interior elements such as a stone fireplace and living rooms adorned with gypseries. These details highlight the heritage value of a building that blends medieval heritage with the beautifications of modern times.
The site is located precisely in Villeneuve (code Insee 12301), Occitanie, and its approximate address (5410 Ginals) suggests a rural or semi-rural setting. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its anchoring in local history, between initial defensive function and subsequent role of aristocratic residence, without however specifying the names of successive proprietary families.
