Origin and history
The château de Goury, located in Loigny-la-Bataille in the department of Eure-et-Loir (region Centre-Val de Loire), is an emblematic 17th century building. This monument is distinguished by its main building body, with a central pavilion whose entrance is protected by a dry moat. At the ends, two square turrets frame the ensemble, each housing a forebody where a staircase is housed. These architectural elements reflect the aesthetic and defensive canals of the era, although residential character here prevails over fortification.
The castle courtyard is surrounded by walls and bordered to the south by dry moats, which end in the east and west with turrets similar to those of the main building. This symmetrical arrangement, characteristic of the seigneurial residences of the Great Century, highlights a desire for harmony and visual control of space. The castle, partially classified and listed as the Historical Monuments since 1964, thus illustrates the evolution of French castles towards prestigious residences, far from medieval fortresses.
The official protections specifically concern the facades and roofs of the central pavilion, as well as those of the corner pavilions and contiguous buildings. The moat and the court, the structuring elements of the estate, are also included in this heritage recognition.
