Origin and history
Granès Castle, located in Realville (Tarn-et-Garonne), is a neo-classical monument erected in 1886 according to the plans of architect Jacques-Paul Lequeux. It replaces an earlier building mentioned in the 17th century, but its current architecture reflects the aesthetic cannons of the 19th century, with a brick and stone facade, dardian roofs, and a strategic implantation on a rocky spur. The surrounding romantic park, conceived as a vegetal setting, reinforces its picturesque character and its integration into the local landscape.
The magnificently preserved interiors of the castle illustrate the luxury of the bourgeois residences of the time. Marbles, carved panels and boxed ceilings adorn the reception rooms, reflecting the owner's pronounced taste for the big parties and the delight. These decorations, combined with the quality of the exterior materials, make the castle a symbol of prosperity and social influence at the end of the 19th century.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 19 October 2012, the castle of Granès includes in its protection its terraces and its park (cadastre C 511 and 52). Today owned by a private company, there remains a major visual landmark of Realville, mixing architectural heritage and local memory. His architect, Jacques-Paul Lequeux, left a lasting imprint, combining neo-classical rigour and romantic sensitivity.
