Origin and history
The château de Grézan found its origins in the 12th century as a commandery of the Hospitallers of the order of Saint John of Jerusalem, located on an agricultural terroir at the edge of the plain of the Dickroise. This strategic site, located at the edge of the first mountain foothills, served as a base for knight-hospitalists for their religious and military activities. The vestiges of this medieval period remain difficult to identify today, as the building has been profoundly redesigned in the following centuries.
In the 19th century, the estate was transformed into a winery, reflecting the region's economic prosperity linked to vine cultivation. Between 1820 and 1888, the buildings underwent major alterations, before being completely redesigned in 1890 under the impetus of Gabriel Mirepoix. The latter entrusts the works to architect Louis Garros, who designs a fantasy fortress inspired by the neo-medieval style, with a crenelated enclosure of several hundred meters, turrets and an English neo-gothic treatment. Mirepoix reportedly launched in Garros: "Make me Carcassonne", illustrating the project's scenographic ambition.
The architectural complex, which consists of seigneurial houses, commons and buildings of exploitation around a central courtyard, is surrounded by a fortified courtine with medieval appearances. The park, designed in the same creative spirit, completes this romantic reconstruction of an idealised castle. Among the features of the site are the use of ancient elements in the carved decoration, evoking the hospital heritage of the place. These aesthetic choices are part of the trend of the wine châteaux of the end of the 19th century, where the richness of wine financed ambitious architectural achievements.
Grézan Castle has been listed as a historic monument since 22 July 1993, a protection that covers facades, roofs and the park. This official recognition underscores the heritage value of this hybrid site, both a witness to medieval hospital history and a remarkable example of 19th-century architectural eclecticism in Languedoc. The protected elements include the cadastral plots D2 693 to 695 and 1112 to 1163, specifying the extent of the preserved domain.
