Origin and history

The castle of Jussy, located in Jussy-Champagne in the Cher department, was initiated around 1590 by the lords of Gamaches, a family originally from Vexin and established in Berry since the 15th century. The construction began under the impulse of François de Gamaches, a royalist gentleman, but was interrupted at his death in 1591, leaving an unfinished part of the house body. His grandson, Claude de Gamaches, released the works between 1646 and 1648 with architect Jean Lejuge, completing the symmetry of the building in the form of "H".

In 1702, the heir Léonore de Gamaches, faced with financial difficulties, sold the castle to the family of Gaucourt, who gave it in 1759 to Philippe-Pierre Labbé de Chamgrand. The latter undertook a major restoration in 1760, modernizing the interiors and removing some original architectural elements. The facades and roofs were classified as historical monuments in 1946, followed in 2015 by the inscription of interiors, moats, gardens and commons.

The castle, surrounded by a French garden, preserves 17th and 18th century furniture, old tapestries, and a collection of 19th century costumes. The Ponton d'Amécourt family, the current owner, continues its restoration and its opening to the public. The architecture mixes brick and stone, with arched galleries attributed to Jean Lejuge, a chapel, and apartments with richly worked woodwork.

The Wars of Religion marked its initial history, with François de Gamaches being a leader of the Royalist party in Berry. In the 18th century, the castle became a symbol of local aristocracy, with amenities reflecting the taste for comfort and elegance under Louis XV. Today, it illustrates the evolution of seigneurial residences, from 16th century religious conflicts to aesthetic transformations of the Enlightenment.
