Origin and history
Kerduel Castle, located in Pleumeur-Bodou in the Côtes-d-Armor (Bretagne), is a composite building with the oldest parts dating back to the 13th century. The assembled pink granite building, including a square tower housing King Arthur's bedroom, bears witness to this medieval period. A back wing and a main house body, built in the 17th century of unseparated granite, complete the whole, while a square tower was added in 1890 to the west of the north facade.
The castle chapel is distinguished by its two-storey structure: a lower level reserved for servants and a higher level accessible separately for the chestnut. This system reflects the social hierarchy of the time. Four justice stones on the site testify to the historic importance of the fief, occupied by the Kerduel family until 1477. The stylistic unit of the castle, despite its successive additions, earned it a partial inscription to the Historical Monuments in 1978, covering the facades and roofs of the castle and the chapel.
The castle illustrates the architectural evolution of Brittany, combining medieval defensive functions (the 13th century tower) and residential developments of modern times. The arthurian legend associated with the main chamber adds a mythological dimension to the site, although its origin remains related to the local feudal history. The materials used – pink granite for the old parts, granite for the extensions – highlight the different constructive techniques according to the periods.
Today, the castle of Kerduel remains a material testimony of the seigneurial organization in Brittany, where the local justice (symbolized by stones) and religious life (storey chapel) revolved around the chestnut power. Its designation as historic monuments preserves this hybrid heritage, both military, residential and legendary.
