Origin and history
The Château de l'Ortois, located in Jaulzy in Oise, finds its origins around 1550, when a small estate was built around a castle. This set probably replaced an older building, as suggested by the 14th century cellars still visible. The site, marked by Renaissance architecture, included elements typical of the era, including a garden decorated with factories (decorative elements), like a small temple, now rare in France.
Destroyed during the French Revolution, the castle was replaced around 1810 by a more modest body of houses. The current remains — walls of enclosure, turrets of angle and temple — were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 7 June 2004. The domain thus illustrates the evolution of seigneurial residences, between Renaissance fascists and post-revolutionary transformations.
The location of the site, although documented (1 Rue des Tournelles, Jaulzy), remains approximate according to the available sources, with a geolocalized accuracy deemed a priori satisfactory. The protected elements bear witness to the heritage importance of the site, despite the changes experienced over the centuries.
