Origin and history
The Château de la Bastide, located in Salers in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is a building probably dating from the seventeenth century. It consists of two bodies of rectangular houses: the one, equipped with one floor and a door dated 1666, opens on a rectangular staircase cage with straight climbs in return. The other house body, back and two storeys high, is joined to a circular tower. A defensive terrace, supported by a wall, precedes the western facade, reflecting an architecture with both residential and protective vocation.
The protection of the castle was undertaken in two stages: the cochère door and the door of the house were inscribed in the historical monuments by decree of 29 June 1951, followed by facades and roofs on 20 May 1964. These inscriptions highlight the heritage value of the building, particularly for its 17th century architectural features, such as the vintage door and the defensive terraces.
Located avenue de Barouze in the centre of Salers, the castle is part of the urban landscape of this municipality of Cantal, in Auvergne. Its plan, combining rectangular houses and circular towers, evokes an adaptation of architectural models of the period to topographical constraints and local defensive needs. Sources, such as the Merimée base and Wikipedia, confirm its status as a historical monument and its anchor in regional history.
