Origin and history

The Château de la Bouillerie, located in Crosmières in the department of Sarthe, is a historic monument registered since 1 June 2017. Built in the 17th century, it underwent major transformations in the early 19th century, then in the 1880s, profoundly changing its original structure. Originally, it had a regular composition typical of the seventeenth century, as the cadastre of 1825 still shows.

The works of the 19th century mainly concerned the exteriors and the chapel, while those of the years 1882-1883 changed the regularity of the building. Since then, interiors have been redesigned several times. Today, only a few elements retain their authenticity, such as the large driveway of linden trees leading to a neo-classical factory and the chapel, redecorated around 1863-1864 but housing a remarkable 16th century window.

The castle is associated with several notable figures, including architects Adrien Lusson and Paul Lemesle, as well as painter Pierre-Honoré Chadaigne. The elements protected by the 2017 inscription include a driveway with its plantations, the garden factory and the chapel Saint-Blaise. These remains provide an overview of the architectural and historical evolution of the site over centuries.
