Origin and history

The Buzardière Castle is a building located in Changé, in the historical region of Maine, Sarthe. Built after the Hundred Years War around 1453 by Guyon de Clinchamp, it was initially a manor house before being enlarged and modified until the 18th century. The chapel, erected in 1520, and the house of the chaplain are the only elements restored today, after centuries of abandonment linked to its use as a hunting appointment.

The monument has been listed as a historic monument since April 13, 1928, recognizing its heritage value. Entering the family of Nicolay by marriage, the castle gradually lost its residential role to become a hunting place, victim of the weather. Its location, 5 km east of Changé and 4.5 km north of Parigné-l.

The architecture of the castle reflects its successive transformations, from its medieval foundation to its 17th and 18th century developments. Although partially in ruins, the chapel and the house of the chaplain offer an overview of its prestigious past. Historical sources, such as the Sarthe Topographic Dictionary (1836), document its evolution and its inscription in the national heritage.
