Origin and history

The house of the Chaboterie is an emblematic building of the Bas-Poitou, built between the 14th and 16th centuries, with a characteristic architecture of the 16th century. Located in Saint-Sulpice-le-Verdon, in the current delegated commune of Montréverd (Vendée), it was listed as historical monuments in 1958. This house illustrates the rural and seigneurial heritage of the region, marked by successive architectural transformations.

The castle is particularly famous for its role in the Vendée war. On 23 March 1796 François-Athanase Charette de La Contrie, nicknamed Charette, was captured there by General Travot in the adjacent wood. A commemorative cross today signals this historic place, recalling the conflicts between republicans and royalists in western France.

Between 2004 and 2020, La Chabotterie welcomed La Simphonie du Marais, a musical ensemble founded by Hugo Reyne, helping to animate the site and make it radiate culturally. The protected elements of the monument include the north pavilion with its corner towers, the court of honor and the entrance poterne, inscribed by order of 25 July 1958.

Throughout the summer, the Logis de la Chabotterie offers a varied programme of entertainment and shows, for the pleasure of young and old alike.
