Origin and history

The Château de la Cour is an emblematic monument of the commune of Châtelain, in the department of Mayenne. It is distinguished by its central location in the village, which suggests an important historical role in local life. Although its exact construction period is not specified, its architecture and castle status indicate a probably medieval or modern origin, typical of the seigneurial residences of the region.

The castle has undergone partial reconstruction, but its former seigneurial home, a key element of its history, is still present. This type of monument often reflects the social and political organization of the time, where local lords played a central role in the administration and defence of the territory. The castles in Mayenne, like that of the Court, were generally places of power, residence and sometimes protection for the surrounding populations, integrated into a network of fortifications and seigneurial domains that structured the region.

The castle of the Court is mentioned in local historical sources, notably in the Dictionnaire historique, topographie et biographie de la Mayenne (1900-1910) d'Alphonse-Victor Angot and Ferdinand Gaugain. This book, a reference for the study of the Mayan heritage, confirms its importance in regional history. Today, it is one of the castles listed in the department, testifying to the architectural and historical richness of the Pays de la Loire.
