Origin and history
Château de la Devèze is an 18th-century building located in Vérargues, in the Hérault department, in the Occitanie region. Today in the heart of a winery, it was listed as a historical monument on 13 November 1974. Its architecture is distinguished by a rectangular building body, flanked by two pavilions to the south and wings back to the north. A terrace lined with a stone balustrade and a double-flyed staircase mark its entrance, while a sundial dating from 1701 adorns one of the pavilions.
Inside, a room preserves an 18th-century gypsum decor, decorated with plant motifs, musical trophies and representations of the four seasons. These elements, as well as facades and roofs, were protected by the 1974 Registration Order. The castle illustrates the architectural and wine heritage of the Hérault, while testifying to the artistic and agricultural practices of the period.
Devèze has its origin in the Latin defensum, designating a protected or regulated area, such as a wood or pasture. This term, declined in devesis or must in regional languages, is common in the Midi. The castle, a private property, thus embodies both a built heritage and a local linguistic tradition, linked to the rural and wine history of the region.
