Origin and history

The Château de Villexavier, now called Château de la Faye, is located in the commune of Villexavier, Charente-Maritime. Built in 1666, it originally belonged to the Guinanson family in the 17th century, before moving to the hands of the Saint-Simon family in the following century. Its architecture, partially destroyed in the 19th century, preserves only the right wing of an ensemble that once formed a U.

The seigneury of Villexavier was owned by Claude-Anne de Rouvroy, Marquis and then Duke of Saint-Simon, Marshal of Camp and Deputy of the Nobility of Angoumois in the States General of 1789. The latter, having emigrated during the French Revolution, marked the history of the place. The castle is distinguished by its low house with broken attices, its skylights with volutes, and a pavilion covered with slates.

On 26 February 2010, the Château de la Faye was listed as a historic monument, recognizing its heritage importance. Available sources, including the Patrimoine et Médias editions (1993) and the Mérimée database, document its architectural history and successive transformations.
