Origin and history

Château de la Finou, also known as Château de Laffinoux, is a building located in the commune of Lalinde, in the Dordogne department of New Aquitaine. Built between the 15th and 18th centuries, it features a quadrilateral of walls reinforced with low towers, partially surrounded by moat. The court of honour houses a 15th century round tower and a rectangular Regency-style pavilion with a terraced gallery. The commons occupy a whole side of this court, testifying to the past importance of the estate.

In the late 19th century, the castle became the residence of the tragedyn Hilarion Ballande, which added an outdoor theatre. After 1945, the Liard family began its renovation before ceding it in the 1970s to the ORTF (now France Télévisions), which made it a holiday centre for its employees. The monument has been included in the inventory of historical monuments since November 29, 1948.

The estate, still private, is now used as a summer resort. Its architecture combines medieval defensive elements, such as the 15th century round tower near the gate, with more recent additions, such as the Regency Pavilion. The presence of moat and walls recalls its origin as a noble den, while subsequent developments reflect its evolution into a leisure residence.

Located in the purple Perigord, south of the Dordogne, the Château de la Finou illustrates local history through its architectural transformations and changes of owners. Its designation as historic monuments underscores its heritage value, both for its building and for its role in the social and cultural history of the region.
