Origin and history
The Château de la Grange Merlin, built in 1860 at Saint-Paul-en-Jarez, is a perfect example of the architecture popular with the bourgeoisie during the Second Empire. Built on a rectangular plane, it rises on three levels: a ground floor, a noble floor and attices. Inside, the main rooms have retained their original decorations, such as woodwork and stucco, as well as remarkable furniture elements. The billiard room, covered with painted panels depicting landscapes and hunting scenes, is particularly notable.
The communes, marked by a regionalist architecture, and the park with period plantations complete this area. The whole, including the main house, the U-shaped communes (former stables, saddlery and barn) and a kennel tower, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of January 25, 2012. This castle thus bears witness to the lifestyle and aesthetic tastes of the social elite of this period.
The location of the castle, although documented (210 Route de Richore, Saint-Paul-en-Jarez), is considered to have poor accuracy (level 5 of 10). This monument remains a representative example of the rural architectural heritage of the Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
