Medieval motte (Case D 292, 294, 627, 628, 766, 767): inscription by order of 26 July 1991

Origin and history

Château de la Motte-Henry is located in Arquenay, in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. This historic site is marked by the presence of a primitive feudal motte, whose structures disappeared in the 15th century, but whose remains (motte and bassyard) remain well preserved. These medieval elements testify to the ancient occupation of the site, typical of the fortifications of land erected between the 10th and 12th centuries to control the territory.

The current neo-Gothic building was built around 1850, replacing or supplementing older structures. This architectural choice reflects the taste of the 19th century for medieval reinterpretations, mixing romanticism and reference to an idealized past. The motte and its enclosure were officially listed in the Historic Monuments by order of 26 July 1991, recognizing their heritage value.

No information is available on owners, architects or specific events related to the castle after its construction. The sources mention only its inscription under the title of Historic Monuments and its precise location in the commune of Arquenay, without details on its contemporary use (visits, accommodation, etc.).
