Origin and history

The castle of La Pause, located in Pessat-Villeneuve in Puy-de-Dôme, was originally a small fief dependent on the seigneury of Pessat, mentioned for the first time in 1560. It was not until the 17th century that it took its present form, probably under the impetus of Christophe Duboys, Chief Financial Officer at Riom, whose coat of arms still remained inside. The building, typical of the genthommières of the time, was characterized by a house body flanked by two lateral forebodys and a central staircase turret, although the southern forebody, housing a chapel, has now disappeared.

La Pause is distinguished by its exceptionally preserved interior, dating entirely from the seventeenth century. The floors, ceilings, fireplaces and especially the murals – imitating large-frame panelling with geometric motifs, coats of arms and a view of the castle – bear witness to a rare artistic know-how. These elements, combined with rooms such as the coat of arms room or the bucrâne room, make it a remarkable example of the provincial aristocratic architecture and decoration of this period.

Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 7 February 1994, the castle includes in its protection the surrounding ground as well as seven major pieces with their original decoration. Although its state of location is considered mediocre (note of 5/10), its authenticity and history make it a local heritage of importance, anchored in the historical landscape of the Auvergne. The site also retains agricultural outbuildings, recalling its dual residential and economic use in modern times.
