Origin and history

The Château de la Perrière, located in Avrillé in the Pays de la Loire, was built in the 17th century by the Goddes de Varennes family on the foundations of an ancient medieval seigneurial residence acquired in 1603. The present building, completed in 1699 by François Goddes de Varennes, succeeds the works initiated by his father, Charles-François. This castle, marked by Louis XVI woodwork and a vaulted chapel, reflects the architectural influence of the two centuries.

The property remained in the Goddes de Varennes family until the early 19th century, then changed hands while remaining in a close family circle. In 1965, the castle was listed as a historical monument, and parts (portal, facades, chapel, interior staircase) were classified in 1983. The town of Avrilé became its owner in 1982 after a controversial expropriation, launching a 26-year restoration (1982-2008) supervised by the Architects of Historic Monuments.

Today, the Château de la Perrière is a place dedicated to private events (marriages, seminars) and houses a golf course created in 1988 on its estate. In 2018, the site was sold to American businessman Zaya Younanun, owner of a luxury hotel group, marking a turning point in its contemporary use. However, the castle retains its status as a historical monument, with protected elements such as the woodwork salons of the period or the glorious garden.

Architecturally, the castle consists of two wings surrounding a courtyard of honour and a terrace opening onto a park bordering the Mayenne. At the back, a chapel and orangery structure an inner courtyard. The south wing, sheltering commons, completes this U-shaped ensemble, typical of the seigneurial residences renovated in the 17th and 18th centuries. Interiors, such as the wrought iron ramp staircase or period chimneys, bear witness to this preserved heritage.
