The entrance gate, as well as the facades and roofs of the two pavilions surrounding it (see AH 77): inscription by order of 10 April 1974
Origin and history
The Château de la Raye, located in Vélines, Dordogne, is a historical monument built in the 18th century. Its architecture reflects the classic style of this period, with neat decorative elements and symmetrical organization of buildings. The entrance gate, typical of the Louis XVI style, is framed by two rectangular pavilions, while the main body of the castle is in retreat, creating a harmonious perspective.
A period grille Louis XVI closed the courtyard of the castle, fixed by pillars decorated with mouldings and surmounted by gables. The main gate, located in the centre, is flanked by two arched doors, decorated with spiral rampants. These architectural details, as well as the triangular front window of the front door, highlight the elegance and refinement of the monument. The facades and roofs of the pavilions, as well as the gate, have been protected since 1974 by an inscription in the Historical Monuments.
The outbuildings of the castle extend on both sides of the courtyard, completing the architectural ensemble. Although information on its precise historical use is limited, the Château de la Raye illustrates the rural aristocratic heritage of New Aquitaine in the 18th century. Its state of conservation and its location, noted as satisfactory, make it an important testimony of the civil architecture of that time.
