Origin and history

The Château de La Roche, located in Chaptuzat in Puy-de-Dôme, finds its origins in the 12th century as a defensive watchtower for Montpensier County. Built between 1250 and 1270 by Guichard IV or Humbert de Beaujeu, lords of Montpensier, the fortress was supported by an oval 13th century tower, a rare vestige in France. This first oval dungeon served as the outpost at the Château de Montpensier, controlling access to the plain of Limagne. The structure was reinforced by a rectangular dungeon in the 14th century, after damage suffered during the Hundred Years' War.

In the 15th century, the castle was erected as a fief for Louis de Bosderon, marking its transformation from a simple fortification into a seigneurial residence. A house and buildings organized around a courtyard are added, backed by a enclosure surmounted by a round path. In 1537, the family of L-Hospital, including Jean de L-Hospital (counsellor of Charles de Bourbon) and his son, Chancellor Michel de L-Hospital (born around 1507 in the castle). Michel de L.

The estate changed hands several times: sold in 1720 to Anne-Gilbert Archon du Gravier, then acquired in 1812 by Baron Jean Grenier, who restored the castle in a romantic medieval style, according to the limited archaeological knowledge of the period. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, medieval houses were destroyed to create a baluster terrace, offering an unobstructed view of the surrounding area. A chapel, built in 1778 by Amable Archon du Gravier, was destroyed in the early 19th century. The castle, listed as a historical monument in 1965 (with the classification of the oval tower in 1981), preserves medieval gardens and a remarkable basin.

Architecturally, the castle combines defensive elements (horseshoe enclosure, rectangular dungeon, ditch) and residential elements (15th century logis, protected bassyard). The oval tower, classified, illustrates a rare experiment of the 12th–13th centuries. The interiors, redesigned in the 19th century, reflect the restoration tastes of the era. The site remains a testimony of the evolution of an aristocratic fortress, linked to the political history of the Auvergne and the Bourbon-Montpensier.
