Origin and history
The Château de la Rue is a mansion located in the commune of Ligneyrac, in the department of Corrèze (Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its origins date back at least to the 15th century, although its most visible parts date back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The body of rectangular houses, flanked by a tower of central staircase in screws, dominates a valley from a height. Built in local limestone, the structure preserves traces of original beige coating, especially on the southern facade, organized around ground openings and acroterar dormant windows.
The castle underwent major changes, including the addition of a north building in 1801, partially changing its façade. Inside, the chimneys reflect its periods of construction: a 15th-century chimney in segmental arch, another 17th-century with walnuts, and a third decorated with a wooded coat of arms and a wall painting depicting a landscape with a fortified castle. These elements, combined with exposed beamed ceilings, demonstrate continuous occupancy and architectural adaptations.
Ranked a historic monument since 1965 for its facades and roofs, then extended in 1998 to the whole castle and its ground, the site remains a private property. The restorations of the 1980s and 1996s (replacement of the huississeries) preserved its character, while integrating developments such as a lucarn passing on the eastern rump. The manor house, initially accessible by a portal, is now served by a covered west gate, reflecting its functional evolution.
The building illustrates the rural seigneurial architecture of the Limousin, combining residential functions and power symbols. The red sandstone staircase tower, surmounted by a five-pointed ridge, and restored chimney stumps underline its status. Although some scalds have disappeared (such as the one replaced by a skylight), the structure retains defensive and decorative details, such as the holes in the skylight or the accolade patterns.
The Château de la Rue is part of a landscape marked by feudal history and then modern Corrèze. Its dominant position, its local materials (Ligneyrac limestone, Collonges sandstone) and its successive developments make it a witness to the social and architectural transformations of the region, from the late Middle Ages to the 19th century.
